In the spirit of new year new me I thought we should talk about handling the current year with fear because you still see the failures ( that are maybe not your fault) of the previous year. Being hopeful again and giving things a try.
Obviously the new year new me has gained a bad rep because people who often post or say such things never carry them through and probably have the same problems every year either trying to gym, trying to stop procrastinating or trying to be disciplined (If its you please don’t be offended). However what I want to talk about is when you’ve had a long year trying and nothing comes together everything looked like it was going to work out then it didn’t or you’ve worked hard all to no avail, where and how do you gather the strength to hope again for the current year – lets dive into it.
I think we all know what disappointment feels like, the initial disbelief and shock and then followed by your heart sinking at the prospect of all the hard work you put in the hope the faith only for it to come crushing down. All of a sudden all the hours, the hope and the hard work were useless. The feeling is crushing almost to the point of vowing never to risk anything because of how you feel (trust me when I say I know that feeling all to well).
May I suggest the answer to trying again is not in trying harder but in re calibrating first.
Often the question arises is this challenge/failure a sign that I should be relentless in my pursuit or that I should give up entirely again re calibrate and find out
By tracing back your steps and asking yourself the relevant questions:
- Did I give it my best? ( If your answer is no then honey you have no business being disappointed go back and work hard)
- What could I have done better, what where my mistakes
- what was my initial why
- can I give it a final try or is it all too much ( I’m not talking about toxic relationships)
- Lastly, If it was not lucrative for next 6 months would my passion fuel me
- What is my last straw
Sometimes the error is in our decisions, sometimes in our attitude and we can discover all of that when we take time ( notice I said time as in time not an afternoon off) to assess and then reset not sulk forever and go for gold. Then re calibrating becomes the process of letting go of all the mistakes and keeping the lessons, learning to forgive yourself and be patient with the process and take it a step at a time if need be
You might be nervous giving the business, the project, the book or the degree another shot but as long as you have the information from your past and your sight set unto the destination after you calibrate shoot for the stars. All the best!
